Traveling Museum with Teaching Artist, Melissa Kate Miller

A classroom and community favorite, the Erie Canal Traveling Museum brings the world of the Erie Canal to life with an interactive exploration into actual artifacts from the days of the early canal. In 2004, former E. D. Helga MacKinnon initiated the museum with her personal collection of objects that represent the laborers and developers of the Erie Canal. Always expanding, the traveling museum allows students to examine and interact with real artifacts as they learn stories about canal life, and use their skills of observation to make smart inferences about what the world was like in the 1820’s and 30’s and what impact the Canal had on people who lived and worked nearby. Participants will find this a great way to appreciate, question, and wonder at the marvel of New York’s Erie Canal.
